Mission Control Co-Founder Inspires Local College Talent 

At Mission Control Systems, we have a strong belief in community and collaboration. We believe in giving back whenever we can, and that includes efforts that build our local community’s technical talent pipeline.  

 

Along these lines, co-founder Jose Cuevas recently spoke to MiraCosta College students about career pathways that could lead to working in industrial automation and controls. As part of the New Tech Tuesday speaker series at MiraCosta College Technology Career Institute, Jose was invited to speak to engineering technician trainees about his work history, providing insight into his career journey and the world of engineering.  

 

The MiraCosta College TCI engineering technician program is a 600-hour mechatronics training program for students interested in pursuing a broad range of manufacturing roles. Jose shared experiences with students taken from over a decade of extensive automation experience. Since industrial automation encompasses so many topics, his presentation also served to help explain some of those disciplines to students and to contextualize the different options within the world of manufacturing.  

 

The future of industrial manufacturing lies in the hands of aspiring engineers and technicians. Our hope at MCS is that outreach with local college programs helps to nurture talent and light the path for the next generation of innovators. We look forward to watching these students embark on their own journeys and hope that their pathways lead to success. We are proud to be a part of their stories.

Cal State San Marcos MBA Masters’ Project and Mission Control Systems

In business, there are moments when academia and industry converge to create something remarkable. One such story unfolded when Mission Control Systems (MCS) engaged with local university Cal State San Marcos (CSUSM) to sponsor a consulting project for students in the school’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) program. 

 

MCS initiated the project in 2020 to chart a strategic vision for the upcoming years. Eager to infuse new ideas into their strategic plan, the company turned to the MBA program at CSUSM, paving the way for a dynamic collaboration. A project team of CSUSM MBA students and MCS executives was formed. David Grooms, senior operating advisor of Corbel Capital Partners and adjunct professor of business at CSUSM, acted as advisor to the group. Together, this team set out to envision the early years of growth for the company, including a strategy for the prioritization, development, and release of tools designed to enhance the DeltaV distributed control system. MCS is excited to report the upcoming release of the company’s second tool, Mission Reports.

 

Work on the project included interviews and surveys of DeltaV DCSusers in the MCS team’s professional network. The objective was to understand issues experienced by Delta V users and to quantify the potential time and cost savings that MCS software tools could provide. Together, the team prioritized tool development and created a plan to expedite market availability for interested users. 

 

Key recommendations emerged from these discussions – primarily, the urgent need for advanced data analysis and system report tools. This insight laid the groundwork for a development plan. As outreach progressed, details of a strategic roadmap emerged to address industry needs.

 

The plan, divided into several phases, was constructed to introduce these tools gradually into the market. The first tool to emerge was Mission Search, now available. Today, Mission Control Systems is gearing up for its second checkpoint in the growth plan, the release of the second tool: Mission Reports. Mission Control Systems: Empowering Community through Innovation at the MiraCosta College Technology Career Institute's Hackathon

You already know Mission Control Systems as your innovation partner, creating advanced search, analysis, and reporting tools for users of DeltaV. Team member Marc Colello recently took innovation to a new level by participating in the 24-hour HackaMechElectrothon, an event hosted by MiraCosta College Technology Career Institute in Carlsbad, California. Like a traditional hackathon fused with an electromechanical speed build, this one-day competition was open to students, educators, and industry representatives, and required participants to design and build a game that would be rated for fun, function, and playability by game players at the end of the event. Marc saw the event as an opportunity not only to showcase his programming skills but also to support the institution where his wife, Kate MacArevey-Colello, teaches an engineering technician work-skills training program. 

"Kate basically talked me into this," he said, grinning, "But I love this kind of opportunity to build a team and a functional product quickly."

 With their two sons participating on opposing teams and that night's dinner on the line, the presence of Mission Control Systems at the event took on an even more significant meaning. As the hackathon unfolded, Marc was partnered with three engineering technician students and two additional engineers. The team set out to create a project that blended the casual vibe of cornhole with the skill and excitement of skeeball, building and coding through the night.As the event concluded, Marc shared his reflections on the experience. "What a neat chance to get to know some aspiring engineering technicians. Despite some setbacks, we had a great time building the project and learning together to quickly get it functional and fun. I'm so grateful to my teammates for their hard work!" Kate adds that they are both looking forward to next year's event.

 

Besides preparing for another go at the championship, Marc and his co-founders are eager to continue their pursuit of excellence, driving innovation and empowering communities through their software solutions. Like Marc's hackathon team, Mission Control Systems has proven that with determination and a shared vision, they can transform simple ideas into reality.

  

In the grand scheme, the HackaMechElectrothon was just one milestone in Mission Control Systems' journey, a journey fueled by a commitment to enhance our automation capabilities.

DeltaV Backup and Recovery: Best Practices 

DeltaV is a powerful process control system that provides a wide range of features and capabilities to help operators monitor and control complex processes. However, like any computer system, DeltaV is vulnerable to data loss or corruption, which can result in system downtime. In this blog post, we will discuss best practices for DeltaV Backup and Recovery. 

1. Regular Scheduled Backups 

One of the most important best practices for backing up your DeltaV system is to perform regular scheduled backups. Backups of critical data should be performed multiple times a day, depending on the amount of data being generated and the criticality of the system. Baseline backups of server images or entire virtual machines should be taken at least once a month. 

2. Incremental backups 

In addition to regular backups, it is important to perform incremental backups of DeltaV data. Incremental backups capture only the changes that have occurred since the last backup, which can help reduce backup times and storage requirements.

Another important best practice for DeltaV backup and recovery is to have a disaster recovery plan in place. A disaster recovery plan outlines the steps to be taken in the event of a system failure or data loss, including the steps to be taken to restore DeltaV data. 

The disaster recovery plan should be tested regularly to ensure that it can be executed effectively in the event of a system failure or data loss. 

5. Monitoring and alerts 

To ensure that DeltaV backups are automatically being created, it is important to monitor the system for potential issues and set up alerts to notify administrators of any issues. This can include monitoring disk space usage, checking for errors in the backup process, and monitoring for system failures.

6. Offsite storage 

An offsite backup is a copy of a production system backup data stored in a geographically different location than the production system. System administrators choose offsite backup solutions to ensure the protection of their data in the event of natural or man-made disasters such as building damage/destruction, hurricanes, fire, floods, tornados, etc. 

7. Documentation 

Finally, it is important to maintain documentation of your DeltaV backup and recovery procedures. This documentation should include backup schedules, disaster recovery plans, system configuration and any other relevant information. 

The documentation should be kept up to date and accessible to all relevant personnel, including administrators and IT staff.
